Relocating to Austin with your family

A clear plan for choosing a suburb, touring from a distance and closing on the right home.

Your relocation, step by step

Most families I work with follow this path from first call to first night in the new house.

  • 1. Discovery call

We talk about work locations, schools, budget and must haves, and set a realistic timeline.

  • 2. Suburb shortlist

I compare commutes, home styles and total monthly costs across two or three areas.

  • 3. Remote tours

Live video tours and notes on each home, so your in person trip is focused.

  • 4. Offer and option period

We negotiate, inspect during the option period and lock in financing.

  • 5. Close and settle in

Remote closing where possible, plus a list of local contacts for your first weeks.

Relocation questions

Can I buy a home in Austin before I move?

Yes. Many of my clients buy from out of state using video tours, a local inspector and electronic signing, then visit once for a focused weekend of showings. Closing can be done remotely in many cases. I send detailed notes and video so you can decide with confidence from wherever you are.

How long does it take to close on a house in Texas?

Most financed purchases close about 30 to 45 days after the contract is signed. Texas contracts usually include an option period, a short window where you can do inspections and walk away for any reason. Cash purchases can close faster.

Should I buy a new build or an existing home?

Both can be good choices. New builds offer modern layouts and builder warranties, while existing homes often have mature trees, larger lots and established neighbourhoods. With a new build, bring your own agent to the first visit and get an independent inspection anyway.

How do I compare commutes around Austin?

Test drive the commute at the time you will actually travel, because traffic on I-35, MoPac and US 183 changes a lot by hour. Toll roads like 183A, SH 45 and SH 130 can save time from the northern suburbs for a fee. If you work downtown, check whether the MetroRail Red Line fits your schedule.
